Making A Good First Impression
People are going to judge you on how you
look. Whether we like it or not, appearance matters (find out why in my other
post Why Appearance Matters).
For things such as job interviews or dates this is especially true. You are
going to need to make a great first impression and if you don’t, chances are
high that there won’t be a second meeting. This is why it’s important that you
look your best. Follow the tips below to learn how to make a great first
impression. None of the steps below are hard to do so they should be a part of
your regular morning routine so you look your best every day.
Shower Every Day
The first thing you do every morning should be to take a shower. Not only will it get rid of the sweat and odors you built up over night, it’s also going to do a good job at waking you up and getting you ready for the day.
Apply Cologne
If you use scented body washes or soaps then avoid this step. For those who don’t use anything scented, apply cologne as soon as you step out of the shower and dry off. Applying cologne or body spray fresh out of the shower will make the smell last a lot longer. Remember to apply in moderation though. For help with applying cologne check out my post How To Wear Cologne Properly.
Check Your Face
Check your face for any blemishes. Check for nose hairs or crusts in your eyes. A quick look in the mirror is all you need and it’s well worth the effort to improve your appearance.
Groom Your Hair
Before you leave the bathroom, do a hair inspection. Remove those nose hairs and the stray hairs on the back of your neck. Do a quick trim of your facial hair if you need one. None of these things are going to take a lot of time but they all will have a big effect on your overall appearance.
Proper Posture
If you want to make a good first impression, proper posture is essential. Make sure to sit and stand up straight. Good posture not only makes you physically look better, it also gives off a look of confidence.
Take Care Of Your Hands
A handshake can make or break you in the business world. A woman won’t want to hold hands with someone who has longer fingernails than she does. Make sure you keep your fingernails trimmed and apply lotion if you have rough or dry hands. Alternatively if your hands tend to sweat a lot be sure to wash them frequently.
Check Yourself Throughout The Day
Things happen. Throughout the day clothing is likely to move around, hair will fall out of place, cologne might wear off, etc. Be sure to do a regular check in the mirror throughout the day to ensure that you are always looking your best.
Making a good first impression doesn’t have to be difficult. All of the tips listed above can be easily added into anyone’s morning routine. The majority of them can be done before you even get dressed and leave your bathroom so there is no excuse as to why you can’t look your best every day.
